About Us

Student working on a immunohematology (blood bank) procedure in student lab.The Colorado Center for Medical Laboratory Science is committed to meeting the clinical laboratory workforce needs of the geographic region. Our mission is to provide excellence in education through activities that support quality clinical practice. The Center accomplishes this by providing innovative curricula and working in partnership with academic institutions and clinical laboratories in the Rocky Mountain West.

The Colorado Center for Medical Laboratory Science is a program of Metropolitan State University of Denver and was established in 1962 under the auspices of St. Luke’s Hospital. In 1983 the program came under the joint sponsorship of Presbyterian and St. Luke’s Medical Centers. In March 1988 the School moved to The PSL Center for Health Sciences Education. In 1995 the school sponsor became HealthONE Alliance which was formed to reflect the organization’s expanded role as a partner with seven Denver metro area hospitals. In 2005 HealthONE Alliance became The Colorado Health Foundation. Today the Colorado Center for Medical Laboratory Science reflects both its historical roots and its affiliations with the region’s laboratory community and its academic sponsor Metropolitan State University of Denver. CCMLS is the longest standing and largest MLS program in Colorado with graduates working in key positions in clinical laboratories throughout the geographic area.

About the Program

The Colorado Center for Medical Laboratory Science offers a post-BS level professional certificate program in medical laboratory science, historically known as medical technology.

  • Students reading culture plates in microbiology during student lab.Students may enter the curriculum after completing the BS/BA degree.
  • Lecture and laboratory courses are offered during the summer and fall semesters in the Center’s teaching facilities.
  • Components of the clinical curriculum occur during the spring semester in “community partner” laboratories throughout the Denver-metro area, Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Longmont and Colorado Springs.
  • Placements during clinical rotations provide students with access to employment contacts after graduation.
  • Most of our graduates begin their careers in laboratories in the geographic area thus helping address the critical shortage of laboratory scientists in this area.

Medical Center of Aurora North Campus serves as the program campus, providing space for teaching laboratories and classrooms.
